Info Post
Phew! Monday is here, and I've survived this weekend hosting my youngest son's 3rd birthday party at our new house. The food was great, the company was wonderful, and the look of pure joy on my son's face made every bit of it worth while! I cannot wait to get pictures downloaded and a post written to show you what all we did!

In preparation for the big party, I've been working a lot on the decor in our home. I've always struggled with how to display my favorite items without looking like a random mess of knick-knacks. I feel like my style is evolving, and I'm LOVING the new look in my house! Today I'll share with you some of the decorating tips I've learned:

There are a few things I think are important design elements in a room, and one of them is books.
A stack of vintage books adds great history to a room, while displaying your personal favorite reads tells the story of who you are.

I have a pocket watch from Jeremy's great-grandfather that I wanted to display, but it needed something to sit on to give it some height. So I gathered a stack of books and set the watch on top, but the words and colors of the books overshadowed the star of the display, the watch. So I grabbed some paper and made some book covers! Here's how simple it is:

Paper Book Covers with Song Lyrics

Open your book and lay it flat on a table, cover side up. Measure the height of your book and the total length of the open book. Cut a piece of paper (I used a roll of drawing paper) to your height measurement and add 3" for your length measurement to allow the paper to fold over the edges of the front and back cover. For example, my book measured 7 1/2" x 13 1/2", so I cut my paper to 7 1/2" x 16 1/2".

Wrap the paper around the cover of your book and fold the extra paper on the sides behind the covers, creating a pocket to hold the book in place.
{TIP} You'll want to wrap the book while it's closed for the best fit.

Crease the edges of the paper along the spine of the book to give you a guideline where to write your lyrics.

Remove the book cover and lay it flat on a table. Lightly write your lyrics with a pencil first, to determine your spacing. Then trace over the pencil with a fine tip pen. (I used a black Sharpie)

Once your ink is totally dry, erase your pencil marks.

Stack your books flat or line them up on a shelf. Stand back and admire your work!

This display pays homage to my husband's family heritage, showcasing his great-grandfather's pocket watch and a picture of his grandparent's farm in 1948. The lyrics I chose for the book covers perfectly describe the roller coaster we've experienced the past year, moving our family to a new state and working so hard to make this house our home.

I love to tell a story using meaningful items, and this display definitely does that!
